Ryman Retirement Village Kohimarama Rd

Picture
Ryman has proposed building a retirement village on vacant land between Selwyn College and John Rymer Place.

In general, we believe that this site is well suited to a retirement village, but we do have concerns over aspects of the proposal.

Our primary concerns relate to:
  1. the height and consequent dominance of the buildings closest to John Rymer Place, and
  2. the potential for serious impacts from construction activities to traffic, noise, vibration and dust

We have submitted to Auckland Council with suggestions for improvements.

Project processed through 'Fast Track' consenting process

The project originally was proceeding through the standard Auckland Council resource consenting process, but in late 2020 it was accepted by the Minister to be processed on the new fast track process. This meant there were no hearings, and only a select few organisations and individuals affected were invited to make submissions. We were not one of those organi8sations and so had no further input. Our original submission to Auckland Council remains.
The Panel responsible for assessing the submissions has now published their decision. They have approved the development, subject to a few changes and conditions. Specifically, one level is required to be removed from the buildings closest to residents in John Rymer Place, a consultation group is to be set up to keep neighbours in the loop, and a number of pre-construction and construction period conditions have been imposed to manage issues around noise, vibration, traffic etc.
